PEO Dockers at Limassol port to stage 24 hour strike

Relevant News

Dockers at Limassol port who are members of PEO will go on 24 hour strike on Wednesday and will protest outside the Presidential Palace when the Council of Ministers holds its regular weekly meeting, the Cyprus News Agency reported on Monday.

A spokesman from PEO trade union confederation told the news agency that a letter will be delivered to the president and minister explaining their disagreement with the establishment of a court of arbitration to deal with the renewal of their collective agreement.

The dockers said they will defend the code on industrial relations and labour practices to date as regards the renewal of their collective agreements and other labour differences which arose when EUROGATE Container Terminal Limassol and DP WORLD Limassol, took over operations at Limassol port, they said.

Meanwhile, SEK trade union confederation has called dockers who are members to a meeting this afternoon to discuss the whole issue. SEK members had participated in a 24 hour strike organised by PEO at the port on December 22 as well as at the general meeting last Thursday where authorisation was given for strike action.

But SEK trade union confederation said last Friday that the measures would damage the port sector and the economy.
