Payment of a special allowance of €750 to Cypriot students who remain abroad will start on Monday, beginning with those who applied first, an Education Ministry official told CyBC said on Saturday.

She said that the ministry had received 13,720 applications. The platform will remain open until April 20, and applications are still coming in, she added.

The applications are being processed and transfers will start on Monday.

The government made available the grant for students who remain in their country of study over Easter to help cover expenses. Food parcels have been sent in the UK while the Foreign Ministry says diplomatic missions are assisting cases in various countries.

But there has been criticism of the government’s decision to impose entry restrictions which effectively exclude students from coming home. Recent changes have excluded students will medical conditions, subject to the approval of a medical board, but the majority of students do not qualify.

Two have gone to court asking it issue an emergency injunction permitting their return.
