Impersonation and forged documents presented at Cyprus’ airports are on an alarming rise with over 230 such cases recorded between January and September’s end this year.

That’s why an urgent meeting was held at Police Headquarters chaired by deputy chief Demetris Demetriou, Philenews reported on Wednesday.

According to Police, passports control officers at the island’s two airports detect at least one forgery or impersonation case on a daily basis.

Main attempted travel destinations are central European countries.

“The specially trained members of the Aliens and Immigration Service who staff the points of passport controls – with the help of special equipment they have – carry out the necessary checks for the authenticity of travel documents. As well as for any offenses related to impersonation,” the announcement also said.

More than 90 cases concerned foreigners who attempted to travel with forged travel documents and over 140 concerned impersonation where foreigners attempted to travel with genuine travel documents but which they did not belong to them.

In 2021, some 110 cases of presentation of forged travel documents were recorded, along with over 150 cases of impersonation.
