Paphos: Woman found murdered, husband sought by police (updated)

Police have sped to a crime scene in Paphos where a woman has been found murdered around noon on Monday in her home near the Paphos Technical School, philenews reports.

The woman — a Syrian national aged 31 years and a mother of seven — was found murdered in her bed bearing multiple knife injuries in many parts of her body.

The woman was transported by ambulance to Paphos hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police investigating the incident have secured an arrest warrant against the husband, a 37-year-old also from Syria, who is the primary suspect in the case.

The husband and the victim had reportedly been separated and he has been reported to the authorities multiple times in the past for incidents of physical abuse in the family, while the husband had been banished from the family residence by court order.

The family has been under the supervision of social services — in fact, the person who found the 31-year-old’s body was a social worker, according to a statement by the head of Paphos Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The incident was reported to police by neighbours who had heard shouting coming from the woman’s home and realised that something was wrong.

Head of Paphos CID Michalis Ioannou said that “as soon as we were notified we secured the scene and started taking statements from neighbours.

“The scene and the woman’s body were then inspected by medical examiner Angeliki Papeta. The victim bears a chest wound that was likely caused by a knife.

“Further examinations will be conducted with the help of the Criminalistic Service Department at police headquarters. The circumstances under which the 31-year-old died are being investigated,” he added.

Ioannou also said that three of the five children living in Cyprus were in the house at the time of the murder. All five children are now at the premises of social services.

There are no testimonies so far saying that an argument had preceded the murder, he added.

According to the medical examiner, Angeliki, Papeta, the crime was committed around 7 am to 8 am on Monday morning.

Ioannou confirmed that the woman was still alive after the attack and tried to contain the bleeding in the presence of three of her children.

Last Monday a complaint had also been filed against the suspect for stealing various objects from the property, while other cases against him for violence in the family are still under investigation.

The victim was a mother to seven children; five children are aged under 12 and lived with her in the Paphos property, and the other two aged 16 and 17 live in Syria.
