Paphos’ city council against construction of high-rise buildings in city’s centre

Relevant News

Paphos city council has rejected five applications for the construction of high-rise buildings in the city’s centre since 2016, philenews reported.

The reason for this is the municipality does not wish to alter the landscape of the city, Paphos’ municipal engineer Neophytos Zavrides said.

Currently, the municipality does not allow the construction of more than five-storey buildings in residential areas.

However, it recently adopted suggestions submitted by the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK) to consider applications for the construction of up to eight-storey buildings outside residential areas and to create a zone where high-rise buildings (up to 20-storeys) could be constructed.

The designated zone will be located far from archaeological sites and environmentally sensitive areas.

Since 2016, 16 applications for high-rise buildings were submitted. The city council rejected five of them, while one was withdrawn.

Of the remaining ten applications, philenews writes, only two will be approved.

According to philenews, in the licensing agreement, the council will include terms to requiring the buildings are maintained and do not show signs of neglect and abandonment for a period of up to 20 years after their construction.
