Paphos Airport is temporarily suspending operations as part of cost savings in view of the coronavirus pandemic.
A ban of passenger flights to Cyprus has been extended until the end of April although cargo flights continue.
The Transport Minister has the right to permit rescue flights to bring or take stranded passengers but these are operated out of Larnaca Airport.
Philenews reports that the decision to suspend operations at Paphos Airport was taken by the Council of Ministers in consultation with operators Hermes Airports given that there are no flights there and all repatriation and cargo planes go to Larnaca Airport.
The last flight at Paphos Airport was on March 29. The suspension of the operation affects only the passenger areas and the buildings, but not its facilities serving aircraft.
This means that the control tower will continue to operate so that the airport is ready at any time to deal with any emergency situations such as flight diversions or unscheduled landings, and also to service the military aircraft at the Andreas Papandreou bases and European countries which use it as a stopover for their operations in the area, philenews added.
The airport will resume full operation once the flight ban is lifted, it concluded.
