Pakistani man arrested, believed to be accomplice to Azeri alleged assassin

Relevant News

Police have arrested a 27-year-old Pakistani man suspected to be an accomplice to an Azeri national who is in custody in connection with an alleged plot to assassinate Israeli businessmen active in Cyprus.

The arrest in Paphos of the Pakistani food delivery man came after the personal data of the Azeri who holds a Russian passport was examined, Philenews reported on Wednesday.

Police confiscated three mobile phones from the place the Pakistani man was staying in the coastal city, it added.

A week ago, Nicosia district court extended the detention of the Azeri suspect that Israel alleges was a would-be assassin recruited by Iran to attack Israeli businesspeople on the island.

The man was arrested in Nicosia on September 27, with police saying that when he was intercepted a pistol with a silencer were found in his rental vehicle.

Israel said it was a “terrorist incident directed by Iran” against Israelis on the island, a charge dismissed as “baseless” by the Iranian embassy in Nicosia but also by police insiders.

The suspect has not been charged and officials have not identified him, beyond describing him as an ethnic Azeri with a Russian passport. Court proceedings were held in camera for security reasons.

Philenews also reported the suspect, thought to have arrived in Cyprus 20 days prior to his arrest, was not cooperating with police.

Police have not traced where the suspect was staying prior to his arrest, but authorities believe he may have been staying in the Turkish-held breakaway north of the divided island.
