OTC medicine prices liberalised

Relevant News

The price of over-the-counter drugs will be completely liberalised and decided between the supplier and the pharmacy, Phileleftheros reported on Wednesday.

It said that non-prescription drugs have been taken off the official state pharmaceuticals price list as the national health system comes into force.

A decree issued by the Health Ministry and published in the official gazette on Friday, makes official a decision taken a few years ago, and in part implemented by the Pharmaceutical Services in drawing up the price list.

Over the past 10 years, wholesale prices of OTC pharmaceuticals were set by suppliers who notified the Pharmaceutical Services which incorporated pharmacists’ profits before publicising the retail prices.

Under the new decree, the wholesale price will continue to be set by supplier but will not feature on the official pharmaceutical’s price list. This means that the retail price will be set by the pharmacists.

The decree stipulates that licence holders must inform the Pharmaceutical Services about the wholesale price of OTC drugs.

OTC drugs are not included in the NHS system which covers only prescription drugs.
