Education and Culture Minister Prodromos Prodromou has said that one in five students who graduate from high school hardly knows Greek – their mother language.

And all this because the country lacks a proper evaluation system at secondary level schooling, he also told CNA in an interview.

The end-of-year Pancyprian Examinations have revealed that at least one in five students, that is more than 20%, finish high school and hardly know the language.

“More than 2,000 children finish school every year and have no proper knowledge of our language. Their score is from 0-5/20 in the exams. And one in two – around 50% – has knowledge of Greek which is not considered satisfactory,” Prodromou said.

“A similar situation is with Mathematics. And not only in the results of 2020 but throughout the years, at least for a decade or so,” he added.

The Minister also said that some progress has been recorded but not enough.
