Elderly abused in nursing homes

Kostas Skarparis, secretary general of the Union of Cypriot Pensioners said that pensioners are having a hard time, while Demos Antoniou, president of the Cyprus Third Age Observatory, noted that old people in Cyprus go through hell and it is time for the State to assist this vulnerable age group.

Both men were talking during yesterday’s meeting of the House Human Rights Committee that discussed old people’s problems. Representatives of other groups but also government officials participated in this meeting.

Among the problems mentioned is the fact that third-age people are abused in nursing homes but some of them are also abused in their own homes by relatives.

According to data from the Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family (SPAVO), in 2017 there were 626 incidents of violence against old people and since then there is no relevant information.

Deputies also mentioned that older women are victims of the big gap there is in pensions since they get 40% less than men.

Furthermore, the issue of insurance premiums since the insurance companies increase them for older people even though there is no evidence that third-age persons cause more accidents.

There was also discussion about the fact that older people are not familiar with digitization and thus they have no access to ministries on issues of pension and other allowances. On this issue, the representative of the Deputy Ministry of Digital Policy stated willing to facilitate the digital information of this group of people.

A representative of the Social Policy and Action Organization referred to the problems of old people who live in mountainous areas, where they are faced with a lack of medical care, no ambulances in the area, and no pharmacy, as well as problematic public transportation.
