Restoration works at parts of the Venetian walls of Nicosia which collapsed last year are ongoing, while the bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage is trying to gain access to an ancient quarry, which provided the original stones for the mid-16th century fortifications.
Takis Hadjidemetriou, the Greek Cypriot Head of the Technical Committee told CNA that the Technical Committee and the Advisory Body visited the site on Wednesday and were briefed by the engineers about the progress of works.
He also said that the Technical Committee also proceeds with the removal of the vegetation on the walls, that causes several problems to the stability of the construction.
According to Hadjidemetriou, the Technical Committee will try to find ways to systematically address the problem and is already in contacts with experts, in order to come up with a comprehensive plan.
The Committee is also searching for stone material that will be used in the restoration of the walls and has located the quarry, outside Turkish-occupied Famagusta, that provided the original stones during the construction of the Venetian walls.
As CNA learns, the quarry is not in use today and is located in a military area.
The same stones form the quarry could be used in multiple conservation projects in the future, particularly in the old city of Famagusta which is surrounded by walls and contains many monuments build with stone.
“The Technical Committee is in deliberations, in order to secure the appropriate material from the quarry that has been located, for the conservation of monuments,” Hadjidemetriou said.
The Technical Committee is also planning to clean up soon the surrounding area of Zuhuri Mosque, in Larnaca, as well as the Agios Panteleimon monastery in Turkish-occupied Myrtou.
