Nicosia pursues to ensure the termination of Turkish provocative actions in Cyprus’ EEZ as conditional in the framework of the Conclusions of the Formal March EU Summit (22-23), considering that the unanimous positions of the “28” will constitute the vehicle for transferring the matter to Varna, three days later, in order for it to be put on the table at the Euro-Turkish leadership meeting, by the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk to Turkey’s President, Tayyip Erdogan.
This was reported to “Ph” by sources, further stating that the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Christodoulides, focuses on this «diptych” in view of today’s meeting of the General Affairs Council, while yesterday, during the Foreign Affairs Council, he highlighted the European dimension of the matter of Cyprus’ EEZ, distributing a map to his counterparts and underlining that six of the plots were allocated to European companies.
He stressed that the energy plans of the Republic of Cyprus constitute an integral part of the Union’s energy policy, emphasizing that “Cyprus’ EEZ is also an EU’s EEZ”. At the same time, Nikos Christodoulides pointed out that “Turkey’s actions are in stark contrast to the obligation of the candidate country for good neighbourly relations and the normalization of its relations with all EU Member States, including the Republic of Cyprus”. In conclusion, the Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed that “in the light of the Turkish actions, we are expecting the EU’s practical and unambiguous solidarity to defend the sovereign rights of its member state, the interests and policies of the Union , as well as international legitimacy” requesting essentially for Conclusions.
