New yellow alert as wintry weather continues to grip Cyprus

The Met Office has issued a new rainfall warning for Friday, the second in the new year, as the wintry weather continues to affect Cyprus.

In its new yellow alert, issued early on Friday morning the Met Office said that rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected to affect the area. The total rain accumulation may locally, mainly over western/southwestern and northern areas reach 50 millimeters in a six hours period.

In force from 5 am to 6 pm on Friday, it comes on the back of heavy rain overnight, particularly in Limassol and Larnaca, which led to more flooding in the old castle area of the town on Limassol. A number of drivers were trapped in their cars and needed the assistance of police and the fire service.

Snow has been falling on the Troodos mountains where the depth of snow at Troodos Square is at 55 cm. Roads leading to Troodos are open only to four wheel drive and vehicles equipped with snow chains.

Weather forecast

In its weather forecast for the next few days, the Met Office said that low pressure is affecting the area bringing rain, isolated thunderstorms and snow in the the higher mountain peaks.

Temperatures today will rise to 14 C inland, 16 C on the coasts and 4 C in the mountains where locally there will be ice.

Tonight scattered cloud are expected to lead to scattered rain and possible isolated thunderstorms and snow in the mountains, with the phenomena later restricted mainly to the coasts. Temperatures will fall to 5 C inland, around 8 C on the coast and -2 C in the higher mountains where there will be frost.

Saturday will initially be fine in many areas but from midday on there will be scattered rain and isolated thunderstorms mainly in the mountains, in land and east of Troodos. There will be more snow in the mountains.

Sunday will be mainly fine with increased cloud from midday on.

Monday morning will start off mainly cloudy with local rain and isolated thunderstorms and snow in the mountains. Winds at times will be very strong. Temperatures will edge up by Monday to close to average for the time of year.

Roads 

The Karvounas-Troodos, Platres-Troodos and Prodromos-Troodos roads  are open only to four wheel drive cars and those equipped with snow chains because of ice. Police have also warned that there is fog and visibility is poor. Roads are slippery and drivers are urged to be particularly careful.
