New restrictive Covid measures for the holiday period on the cards

Relevant News

The compulsory use of masks at primary schools and the introduction of self-tests for the vaccinated against Covid are among potential stricter measures to imminently come in effect in Cyprus.

In a bid to curb the spike in daily coronavirus cases and hospitalisations, new restrictive measures for the holiday period are also expected to be approved by Cabinet on Wednesday.

And this comes hours only after the use of the CovScan app became mandatory, Philenews reported on Tuesday.

Insiders said the measures being floated also include restricting the number of people at public gatherings and the potential cancellation of some Christmas events – including school events.

On Monday, Health Minister Michalis Hadjipantelas held separate meetings with President Nicos Anastasiades and the epidemiological team advising the government.

He told reporter that – most likely – three weeks will be given to the uninvited to be vaccinated and if they do not respond then restrictions will be imposed on their access to specific places.

On whether the inclusion of the third dose of vaccine in the SafePass will be included should be clarified on Wednesday.

And this because during Monday’s meeting between the Minister and the scientists some practical issues that may arise during digital control were discussed.

However, if the measure is finally implemented then the SafePass currently in force will be abolished at seven and not six months from the day of taking the second dose.
