Mystery in baby case as doctors disagree on possible abuse

Relevant News

A five month baby girl at the centre of a suspected case of sexual abuse does not appear to have been raped, one of the doctors who examined her told Phileleftheros, contradicting remarks made by a colleague.

Andreas Neophytou, who is director of Makarios Hospital, told Phileleftheros that he was one of the two doctors who examined the baby that was brought to the hospital to be vaccinated. The paediatrician suspected abuse and asked for the case to be examined.

“I cannot say there was abuse. There does not appear to be rape,” Neophytou told Phileleftheros.

Doctors have established a broken hymen but disagree on what caused it.

The father of the baby is in police custody but denies any abuse. The mother has told police that the baby may have been hurt when the father was changing her nappy.

Neophytou did not rule out the broken hymen may have been caused by ‘intense cleaning’ or some other way, Phileleftheros said. He added that some babies were born with broken hymens.

On Wednesday, the deputy head of the paediatric surgical unit at the hospital Efthymios Tsivitanides said it appeared that baby had been raped.

The baby and the mother have been taken into care as police inquiries continue.
