MPs call for environmental protection of Limassol’s Lady’s Mile

Relevant News

MPs on Monday called for action to protect the environment at Limassol’s Lady’s Mile beach as they expressed regret that a planned revamp has become ensnared in red tape.

The issue was discussed in the House Interior Committee whose deputy chairman Yiorgos Georgiou voiced disappointment that despite undertakings made by the Interior Ministry that the work would start in 2018, this had been delayed because of lack of coordination between the Town Planning Department and the ministry itself.

He said that still pending was the financing of the €6 m project — due to be shared between the state and the communities as well as the approval of the environmental impact study.

The MP said that the British Bases have agreed, while the traffic management and road network have been approved by the traffic studies body.

The project was important to Limassolians as this was one of the biggest and most beautiful beaches in the district that needed to be protected. The environment was now suffering among other from car and motorbike racing in the area, he added.

The project aims to protect the natural habitat, to create a road network and protect nature more generally, Georgiou said adding that the Department of Town Planning has been asked to be in a position to make a public presentation by December.

DISY MP Andreas Kyprianou spoke of enormous environmental destruction from the thousands of cars that go there every day during the summer which destroy both the Akrotiri wetland and the surrounding areas.

He added that five restaurants operate in the area without an electricity or sewerage connection. Implementation of the project will protect the environment of the area by creating the basic infrastructure with environmental sensitivity which will cover the needs of beach users, he said.
