MPs adopt law protecting rights of Britons in case of no-deal Brexit

Relevant News

Parliament voted by majority on Friday to approve a law  regulating the rights of Britons in Cyprus in the event of a no deal Brexit.

The law will ensure freedom of movement  and residence in the Republic of UK citizens and their families, the Cyprus News Agency said.

The British High Commission welcomed the decision.

The law also sets out the procedure under which such citizens can secure the relevant residence documents.

The committee’s report accompanying the law clarified that implementation of the law is subject to the principle of reciprocity. It will come into force at a date to be determined by cabinet, taking also into consideration measures to be taken by the UK government.

Interior Ministry officials had told the committee that at the urging of the European Commission, most EU Member States had adopted similar measures — again on the principle of reciprocity — in order to safeguard the rights of EU citizens in the UK in the event of a no deal Brexit.

Foreign Ministry officials told the committee that the UK intended to take all necessary measures to safeguard the rights of EU residents in the UK under the same conditions currently in force.
