Mozart and Jazz with the CSO

Relevant News

The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, under the artistic direction of Jens Georg Bachmann meets on stage for the first time with Berlin Philharmonic’s principal clarinetist Wenzel Fuchs. Audiences in Nicosia, Larnaca and Paphos will enjoy a programme combination of Mozart and contemporary works with jazz effects.

“Three concertos and a pavane, or “three twentieth-century works alongside a Classical masterpiece”.  Both fittingly describe this mesmerizing programme, yet the concert’s title reads, more appropriately, ‘Mozart and Jazz’!

Mozart’s wonderful Clarinet concerto will be interpreted by the renowned soloist Wenzel Fuchs, Berlin Philharmonic’s principal clarinetist.

Next to Mozart’s concerto, all three more modern compositions by Ravel, Copland, and Schickele bear a connection to jazz music by integrating jazz stylistic features and effects.

In his Concerto for chamber orchestra, Peter Schickele uses extensive jazz-blues inspired pentatonic scale runs, whilst Aaron Copland in his Concerto for clarinet uses slapping basses and whacking harp sounds. As for Maurice Ravel’s masterpiece Pavane for a dead princess, it provided the musical substance to several popular and jazz music adaptations, the most notable of which being ‘The Lamp Is Low’, recorded in 1939.

Three concerts will be given as follows:

Nicosia: Thursday 17 October 2019

Pallas Theatre, Paphos Gate, 20:30

 Larnaca: Friday 18 October 2019

Municipal Theatre, 20:30

 Paphos: Saturday 19 October 2019
