Women in Cyprus marched demanding stronger political action against climate change on Sunday morning, Mother’s Day.

The march, which was organised by Mothers Rise Up, and was held simultaneously in many parts of the world, started at 10 am outside the Parliament building.

From there, the protesters marched towards the Presidential Palace and submitted a memorandum, asking for more effective policies to combat climate change.

The memorandum was co-signed by Mothers Rise Up, Youth for Climate Cyprus, Mums In Cyprus, Eco Mamas, Friends of the Earth Cyprus and the Cyprus Natural Coastline initiative.

It contained six requests:

  • The government aligns its targets and policies to meet the greenhouse gas reductions necessary for limiting warming to 1.5°C
  • The government dedicates the necessary resources to achieve the aforementioned targets
  • The strengthening of the education system as regards the climate crisis in the public schools’ curriculum but also the introduction of experiential workshops
  • For the Government and national decision bodies to take greater action towards eradicating plastic pollution and restoration of polluted ecosystems
  • For action to combat climate change to be taken in a socially just way
  • Creation of a national action plan to adjust to climate change

On May 3, pupils staged a silent protest and symbolically closed their mouths with cloth that read “HELP ME” to demand stronger climate change policies.
