Mitsero murders: Option of partly draining Memi lake shelved

Relevant News

Authorities have shelved plans to drain part of Memi lake near Xyliatou where a search is underway for one of the victims of a self-confessed serial killer after the Water Development Department cited concerns over the environmental impact.

Phileleftheros reports that the the Water Development Department had told the fire services that it could not agree to part of the water being drained into a nearby creek.

Fire services chief Markos Trangolas had told the Cyprus News Agency that authorities were considering partly draining the lake in order to increase visibility.

But he said that any decision would be contingent on competent authorities giving their go ahead.

Phileleftheros said that the Water Development Department cited concerns that the water from the lake would contaminate underground water sources.

Trangolas said the search for the body of a six year old girl — one of seven victims of a 35 year old Cypriot army officer in custody for killing five women and two children — would continue using robotic cameras. Where necessary, divers would enter the lake to comb specific areas.

Meanwhile a search continues at Kokkini Limni at Mitsero for the body of a 30 year old woman continues.

Authorities have recovered five bodies at three different locations, including two at Kokkini Limni but despite extensive searches using divers, robotic cameras and sonar equipment, they have still not located the other two victims.
