Mitsero area protest against asphalt plant relocation continues all night long

Relevant News

Mitsero area residents where an asphalt plant is set to be relocated despite their protests stayed at the proposed site all night long to prevent early morning works on Wednesday to begin.

They pledged to stay there for as long as it takes to prevent the relocation of Prometheas Asphalt Ltd to the area which is highly polluted anyway, according to the residents.

On Tuesday morning, police clashed with protesters and two community leaders were arrested and released hours later after they prevented the driver of an excavator sent by the asphalt company to begin relocation works. Tension and clashes with riot police prevailed all day long.

The relocation of the plant was decided following a relevant cabinet decision in 2020 to move three asphalt plants from the Tseri and Yeri area. These are expected to be relocated in Mitsero, Kalavasos and Koshi area, whose residents have protested the decision.
