Ministry denies delays in hiring lifeguards

Relevant News

The Interior Ministry on Friday brushed aside criticism about delays in hiring lifeguards, saying that appointments were being made gradually, depending on how busy the beaches are.

On Thursday, the Lifeguards Association said that because of delays in taking on more staff, half the lifeguard towers in Limassol and Paphos districts were not in operation.

But the ministry said that in line with national scheme Salamis, as was the case last year, appointments were being made gradually.

It said that so far all 26 lifeguards needed for Larnaca district have been appointed. And 19 lifeguards have been hired in each of Limassol and Paphos districts and more appointments will follow.

“Appointments are made in stages, in line with the time of the year and how busy the beaches are which also of course depends on the weather,” it said.
