Minister: Dangerous Akamas road to be repaired

Relevant News

The road where a Russian couple were killed when their car went off a cliff in the Akamas is not closing, but is being improved as part of the national plan for the sustainable development of the Akamas national park, Agriculture Minister Costas Kadis said on Tuesday.

He said the road would be improved so as to be accessible to visitors’ and the national park’s vehicles but said that there will be significant changes as to how someone moves around within Akamas national park.

His comments came hours after local authorities in the area called a meeting in Polis Chrysochous for this evening to express their disagreement with the closure of the road and to call for it to be widened and repaired. The Greens have argued that the road is dangerous and should be closed to the public.

He said the plan was nearly ready and would be submitted to cabinet in the next few days. It includes the development and improvement of infrastructure to facilitate visitors and to make their experience there pleasant and safe.

Some 88 km roads, including the one under discussion, are to be improved and the money had been budgeted. Other  plans to improve the visitors’ experience include info centres, view points, parking, and sanitary facilities while efforts to conserve biodiversity will continue, he added.

All this will be submitted to cabinet in the next few days so that we have the basic principles of the plan. The final plan will be approved together with the local plan which is being prepared under the supervision of the Interior Ministry, he added.

Procedures for the infrastructure was expected to begin immediately, he added.
