Met Office rainfall alert until 4 pm; police warn of slippery roads

A low pressure system is affecting Cyprus with rain and isolated thunderstorms and dust in the atmosphere.

The Met Office last night issued a yellow alert which is in force until 4 pm on Friday.

“Rain at times and isolated thunderstorms are expected to affect the area. The total rain accumulation is locally likely to exceed 50 millimetres in a six hours period,” it said.

A second yellow alert that was also issued last night warning of gale force winds expired at 8 am on Friday. But the gusty winds led to some problems in Paphos, with the fire service responding to four calls in the town of Paphos to move fallen trees and another six in the Polis Chrysochous area. In two cases, cars were damaged.

Roads

Police are urging the public to be careful because of the weather.

It said that there are mudslides and rock slides on the Kakopetria-Pinewood, Orkonta-Kato Pyrgos, Pedoulas-Kykkos-Milikouri, Pedoulas-Kambos and Kambos-Stavros tis Psokas road

Many roads are slippery because of the rain and there is fog in the Ayios Nicolaos tis Stegis and Kambos areas.

Drivers are urged to adhere to the traffic code, drive carefully and slowly and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.

Weather forecast

A low pressure system system south of Cyprus is affecting the area. Dust will be observed in the atmosphere up and until Saturday the concentration of which will be high at times.

Friday will be partly cloudy with local rain and isolated thunderstorms and strong winds. Temperatures will rise to 19 C inland, around 20 C on the coast and 10 C in the mountains.

Tonight will start off mainly cloudy with local showers and scattered thunderstorms but will soon improve. Temperatures will fall to 12 C inland, around 14 C on the coast and 5 C in the mountains.

Saturday will be cloudy at intervals with the possibility of local, isolated showers or thunderstorms.

Sunday and Monday will be mainly fine however increased cloud at intervals may lead to isolated showers in the afternoon, mainly in the mountains.

Temperatures will edge up over the weekend to range a little above the seasonal average, remaining at the same levels on Monday.
