MED 5 Ministers in Cyprus to draft new EU Pact on Asylum and Migration

Relevant News

With the aim of promoting a new European Pact on Asylum and Migration the competent Ministers of the five front-line Mediterranean countries – Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Spain and Malta – are meeting in Paphos on Friday and Saturday.

On the agenda of the MED 5 Ministers is the evaluation of the mechanism already proposed by the European Commission, an official announcement also said.

And the promotion of the provision of voluntary solidarity to frontline Member States for the relocation of a number of migrants to other countries of the bloc.

The meeting in Paphos coincides with the latest tragedy of irregular migrants when 18 people, most of them women, died early on Thursday  when their vessel sank off the Greek island of Lesbos.

This was the second maritime disaster involving migrants in the Aegean Sea in under a day. The boat sank east of Lesbos, which lies close to Turkey’s Aegean coast.
