The Limassol District Court sentenced a 30 year old man from Georgia on Monday to 20 days in jail for assaulting police officers last Friday while the latter were conducting checks for compliance with the government’s movement restrictions for Covid-19.

The 30 year old, who confessed to the crime, was under 2 days custody since Saturday for a case concerning assault against police officers, malicious damage and disobedience to the government’s decree.

The incident unravelled in the Ayios Tychonas area after police were tipped off that a group of men were wandering about for no reason in violation of the Health Ministry’s decrees.

Police arrived at the scene where the 30 year old refused to provide his details and did not possess the required movement permission.

The man then reportedly assaulted the police officer kicking him back against his motorbike which fell to the ground and got damaged.

The man attempted to assault the officer anew and a citizen at the scene attempted to intervene.

The officer then placed the man under arrest.

When a police car arrived at the scene, the man then attempted to assault two officers escorting him to the vehicle and he spit in the face of one of them.

He then continued resisting and kicked and broke the side view mirror of the police vehicle.

In addition to the 20 days in jail, the Limassol District court also ordered the 30 year old to pay 400 euros for the damages caused to the police vehicles.
