A 43-year-old Greek Cypriot man caught on video kicking a Congolese woman holding her 11-month-old baby today appeared before Larnaca district court to face criminal charges. The man was remanded in custody for four days.
The video went viral on Thursday and was universally condemned. The assault took place near Larnaca port earlier that day against an asylum seeker from Congo, but the video was posted on Thursday morning on Twitter by an anti-racism activist.
Among others, the 43-year-old, is facing charges about violation of the law on racism, assault, violence against a woman, and threats. It seems that he threatened to kill both the woman and her child. The woman was seeking a solution for a car the man had sold her but had several mechanical problems.
