Relevant News

Nicosia Criminal Court has handed down a 10 year jail sentence to a man who pleaded guilty to possessing 1.58 kilos of cocaine with intent to supply.

The man had agreed to store the drugs at an empty family home for a fee and where they were discovered by police on May 31, 2o19. They did not belong to the defendant.

The court noted that the defendant was neither the owner nor the brain behind the crime, but said that possession of cocaine with intent to supply is punishable with up to life imprisonment.

The defendant was due to return the cocaine to its owner on the day he was arrested. The court said that although the defendant’s role was — as his defence lawyer had argued limited — it was nevertheless important as he had aided the criminal activity of the owner who he never named.

The defendant is a Greek Cypriot father of two who had been using since the age of 13 but stopped doing so four years ago.

He has a prior conviction for breaking into a shop and stealing for which he was sentenced to six years in prison and was released after serving four.
