A 25 year old man from the Larnaca district was remanded in custody for eight days on Wednesday as police investigate a massive haul of 16 kilos of cocaine imported from a European country.

The Cyprus News Agency said he is being held to facilitate police inquiries into a case of conspiracy to commit an offence, illegal import and possession of drugs with intent to supply.

The inquiries concern 16.467 kilos of cocaine.

A police investigator told the court that information had been received in cooperation with other European countries that two packages containing cocaine was due to be sent to Cyprus.

The two parcels were sent by the security services of a European country to customs and Cyprus police and from there taken to a private courier company.

Yesterday, a man contacted the company and asked that the two parcels be delivered to the address written on the package.

At around 3 pm, the packages were taken to a block flats at Pervolia where the suspect appeared, paid the fees, signed with a different name, took delivery and drove off.

Drug police tried to cut off his vehicle but the suspect sped off, colliding with civilian cars and a police car in his attempt to get away.

He was pursued and stopped at Kiti where he was arrested. During questioning he said that he had picked up the cocaine for a fee after receiving instructions to do so and in full knowledge that the packages contained drugs.

The police investigator told the court that the case was a very serious one and appeared to involve a drug ring that operates throughout Cyprus.

Police are looking for the suspect’s associates. The drugs will be sent for tests to facilitate police inquiries. Drug police will investigate courier companies and are expected to ask for the help of Interpol and Europol to pursue inquiries outside Cyprus.

The suspect’s lawyer did not object to his client being remanded in custody.
