A man was spotted floating unconscious in the sea off Lara on Friday afternoon. First reports said the man was a Russian, about 46 years old, who had gone spearfishing in the area.
Police said the man was spearfishing about 300 metres offshore from Lara. His wife looked for him but was unable to find him and called for help.
The man was spotted floating unconscious in the sea by another swimmer and was taken to Ayios Yeorgios fishing shelter from where he was rushed by ambulance to Paphos Hospital. Doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
His wife told police that he had gone out to sea on a small inflatable boat, with a diver’s suit but without an oxygen tank.
The cause of death is being investigated.
