Man attacks police during restriction checks, in custody

A 30 year old Georgian man was remanded in custody for 2 days by the district court in Limassol after attacking officers and damaging a police vehicle during checks on the restriction decrees.

According to a police report, the incident happened at the Ayios Tychomas area, after a tip off that foreign nationals were in public without documents, violating the decree.

The 30 year old appeared to have refused to cooperate, not providing identification, nor did he have the necessary permission in accordance to the decree. He attempted to punch the police officer conducted the check and then kicked him onto his police bike.

The Georgian, who seemed to be under the influence of substances, attempted to further attack him, with a citizen intervening and the officer subsequently arresting him.

Following his arrest, the man attempted to attack 2 more officers taking him to the patrol car. He then caused damages to the car.

The 30 year old had requested political asylum, but was turned down in late January.
