Man arrested for selling fake antiquities

A 44 year old man is under arrest in Paphos on suspicion of selling off replica pottery as antiquities.

According to the complaint submitted to police, the unwitting buyer had paid  €59,800  for 11 clay pots he was told were antiquities dating back to the Hellenistic period.

But the buyer later became suspicious and had five of them checked by a private expert who told him they were actually under 100 years old.

The items were taken by police to the Department of Antiquities which confirmed that they were replicas of ancient pots.

Peyia police is continuing its investigation.
