Lukewarm interest expressed for contracted guards to monitor Cyprus’ green line

Relevant News

The deadline for submitting applications for the recruitment of 300 guards to monitor the divided island’s green line for migrant crossings expires on Wednesday but it will be extended.

Because not enough interest has been expressed, Philenews reports citing police chief Stelios Papatheodorou.

So far, only 187 applications have been submitted and that’s why the deadline is extended to December 2, 2023, he also said.

The contracted police officers who will be monitoring the green line will be armed and have increased powers to monitor the 180km long buffer zone.

The police force has already prepared a five-week training plan, plus certificates for the possession of weapons as is common practice.

Papatheodorou also said he expects the newly contracted staff to be fully capable of handling their duties within a month and a half after receiving proper training.

And that they will never be alone, but under the supervision of instructors and other members of the police force.
