Limassol stepping up fight against mosquitoes

Relevant News

Limassol Municipality said on Thursday that it is stepping up spraying against mosquitoes using bio-insecticides.

It said that recognising citizens’ concern that this year’s heavy rains will mean increased numbers of the insect, it was spraying all possible mosquito hatching areas as well as in all places where there is stagnant water within city limits, focusing on rivers, streams and drains.

Additionally, in cooperation with the health services of the British Bases and the Health Ministry a plan of action has been drawn up to deal with mosquitoes in western Limassol with additional measures and more personnel.

Work to clear open spaces from wild vegetation has started already, earlier than usual, while clean-ups are planned in areas bordering on streams, it added.

The municipality urged the public to support the effort by taking measures at their own premises. The public should remove stagnant water and any objects which may collect water from their gardens such as bottles, old tyres, flower pots and other containers.

Sewerage coverage must be replaced on repaired to ensure they are hermetically sealed while wire mesh should be placed on ventilation pipes of the sewerage system.

The municipality is recommending that the public replace destroyed or rusted water tanks and ensure they are well sealed and to clear gutters to ensure they do not retain water.

In cases where there are swimming pools, steps must be taken to ensure that proper maintenance procedures are in place.

Finally, the municipality said that to protect from mosquito bites, where possible it recommends the installation of mosquito screens on  doors and windows and the use of mosquito nets or approved mosquito repellents.
