Limassol municipality to upgrade coastal front

Relevant News

The municipality of Limassol is planning developments for the city’s northern coastal front, Phileleftheros reported on Monday.

According the newspaper, mayor Nicos Nicolaides wants to upgrade the area in order to match improvements in Limassol’s southern coastal front, such as the redevelopment of the historical centre, Olympion coast and GSO, the old port and the construction of the marina.

Nicolaides told Phileleftheros that the municipality is focusing on improving the facade of old buildings such as restaurants, shops and apartment buildings in an area of 3.5 km from the old port towards Crowne Plaza hotel.

With these projects, the municipality aims to achieve a balanced development and stop the structural division between the modern southern coastal front and the impoverished northern coastal front.

The municipality has commissioned a study for this purpose which suggested:

  • The removal of all arbitrary interventions in the area.
  • The installation of water tanks on the top of buildings and to paint their facades in white, grey or beige colours.
  • To repair or replace visible electrical and hydraulic installations, remove billboards and install metallic covers in the place of tents.
  • To add paving, lights and green spaces in public streets and repair existing ones.
  • The construction of accessible spots on pavements and building fronts.
  • The installation of new street furniture.
  • To move all garbage bins and install grills round the trees.
  • The construction of pedestrian crossings between the vertical roads of the coastal front.
  • The installation of banisters and new benches.

According to Phileleftheros, the projects will cost around 5 million euro and the municipality will try to cover part of the expenditure with EU funds.
