Limassol could be holding two annual marathons on the same day next year if dispute is not solved

Limassol could be holding two annual marathons on the same day next year if the hot issue with the contractors is not solved on Tuesday afternoon when the council is set to extraordinarily meet.

The company that had the contract for holding the event for the past 11 years announced it will hold races on the same dates – March 18 and 19 – if the surprise decision of GSO (Olympia Sports Club) is implemented.

GSO has decided to award the city’s marathon to a new contractor without informing the Limassol Municipality which publicly expressed surprise and objection.

Limassol Mayor Nicos Nicolaides told CAN he was surprised that GSO had decided on its own to award the contract for the marathon to a new company.

And that he felt this went against the memorandum of understanding among the four Limassol bodies – municipality, GSO, the Limassol chamber of commerce and industry (Evel) and Etal – about the collective administration of the marathon.
