Lefkara village has been awarded the status of ‘Best Tourism Villages’ by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).
The initiative was launched to advance the role of tourism in safeguarding rural villages, their landscapes, natural and cultural diversity, local values and activities as well as local gastronomy.
Lefkara Mayor Sofoclis Sofocleous said: “We had presented a comprehensive proposal under which Cyprus was claiming this world award, but our hopes were not very high.
“However, we were surprised to hear that Lefkara is now one of the best tourist villages with a official stamp by the World Tourism Organization.”
