Aspiring young drivers will be able to secure a learner’s licence from the age of 17, the Council of Ministers decided on Wednesday, adding that driving lessons will henceforth be compulsory. Learner’s licences were previously issued from the age of 17 and a half.   Drivers must be at least 18 to undergo a test for a full fledged driving licence.

Deputy government spokesman Klelia Vassiliou said that as part of efforts to prevent road accidents, drivers aged 76 and more will be obliged to submit a health certificate every year and apply for a renewal of their driving licence.

In addition cabinet decided to exempt cars belonging to or used by disabled people from road tax.
