Larnaca district is making headway against eye pollution, the Larnaca Tourism Board said on Monday as it warned that eye sores such as ugly signs and placards erode the competitiveness of Cyprus tourism.
It said that haphazardly placing ads in public places harms not only aesthetics but the environment, and creates hazards for drivers and pedestrians. The problem is compounded by the failure of most local authorities to take action, even though they can legally do so, it added.
At the initiative of the Tourism Board, Larnaca Municipality, the CTO and consultants Concept Cyprus, a programme has been introduced to upgrade Saint Lazarus square with the aim of extending it to other areas.
Ugly signs have been removed from buildings in the area and replaced with others that have a similar design. Buildings’ facades have been cleaned up and the air condition units covered. What remains is placing a uniform style of umbrellas and shades and adding more green.
In Oroklini, the community council is removing illegal ads and posters on the Larnaca-Dhekelia road while Chirokitia has decided that it will allow only signs made of wood.
And in Zygi, the community council has removed 50 signs of taverns and other businesses placed illegally at three central cross roads. These have been replaced by central, uniform sign posts that guide visitors towards companies in the village.
