Kophinou Centre in urgent plea for equipment

The Reception Centre for Asylum Seekers in Kophinou has written to government ministries asking for donations of equipment and other items in order to help improve the living conditions of hundreds of asylum seekers lodged there.

The letter was sent to the permanent secretaries of the ministries and copied to the presidents of the Union of Cyprus Municipalities and the Union of Cyprus Communities.

It said that in light of recent initiatives to improve infrastructure and services at the Centre, urgent needs have arisen for household, office and other equipment, as well as for pre-fab houses and much else which cannot be secured because of financial and procedural limitations.

In order to cover at least some of these needs and save resources, the centre had decided to ask all state services, including semi-government organisations, whether they could provide some of that equipment, it added.

The list below gives some examples of the centre’s needs: pre-fabricated houses (containers);  vehicles (double cabin trucks and a small bus);  office furniture; sun shelters; telecommunication equipment; computers, printers etc; air condition units, washing machines;  fans; TVs; other household equipment; irrigation systems; trees for planting,  water tanks; tools, paint etc.

The Kophinou Centre was opened in 2004 and can house 400 persons.
