Relevant News

The Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO has added ‘Kleftiko’ lamb to the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, according to an announcement by the organisation earlier today.

The application to add Kleftiko to the island’s intangible cultural heritage was made in 2019 by the Athienou Municipality and the Kallinikeio Municipal Museum of Athienou.

In addition to Kleftiko, five other items have been added to the list, namely the cultivation of the Cypriot olive and olive products, the ‘Kipriakes Fones’ traditional melodies, Cyprus’ milk culture (traditional practices, manufacturing techniques), the Lysos village ‘Maxilles’ (dried figs), and the Rizokarpaso village traditional bread-making techniques and traditions.

UNESCO Cyprus has also launched the 2020 cycle of applications to register intangible heritage and has invited prospective applicants to submit their proposals by February 28, adding that details on the process can be found on its website www.unesco.org.cy.
