Kidney failure cases due to heatwave-Take in lots of water, doctors say

The Paphos General hospital has reported seven serious renal failure cases over the past week due to the prolonged heatwave, which saw temperatures of over 43 degrees for two days in a row.

Head of the hospital’s Kidney Unit Lakis Yioukka told that Cyprus News Agency that many cases of renal failures came in over the past few days, mainly elderly patients.

7 people were admitted for further treatment over the past 2 days, with Dr.Yioukka noting that this was rare.

Τhe renal failure was due to heat stress, as well as dehydration that comes along with a drop in blood pressure.

Doctors advised people to take in lots of fluids, while elderly patients must remain in a cool place to prevent heat stress and their blood pressure taken daily.

If blood pressure is low, then patients or their relatives must contact their GP and arrange a visit, otherwise they might need dialysis.
