Outgoing Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou will hand over his portfolio on Thursday after prolonging his exit in order to oversee structural changes in the justice system.
Nicolaou submitted his resignation on May 2 following an uproar over the way police handled cases of missing women and children later found to be the victims of a self-confessed serial killer.
President Anastasiades had asked Nicolaou to stay on for a few more weeks because a number of issues relating to judicial reform were still pending.
On Thursday the Cabinet is expected to approve the legislation to promote the reform.
According to Phileleftheros, the President’s top pick to succeed Nicolaou is lawyer Kyriacos Koushos.
Koushos was born in Famagusta in 1952 and studied Law in the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He was admitted to the Cyprus bar in 1977 and is a senior partner in Koushos Korfiotis Papacharalambous LLC.
He has served as the vice-chairman of the board of directors of the Hellenic Bank and Deputy Mayor of Strovolos.
Phileleftheros writes that Dysi is also considering the option of Nicos Tornaritis, third in line in the ruling party after president Averof Neofytou and deputy-president Lefteris Christoforou.
Tornaritis was born in Nicosia in 1964. He studied law and political science at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and attended the programme “Senior Managers in Government” at the Kennedy School of Government.
He has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2001 and is currently the Parliamentary leader of Disy.
He is chairman of the House Committee on Educational Affairs and a member of the Committee on the Environment and of the Committee on Human Rights and on Equal Opportunities for Men and Women.
