A total of 509,662 tourists visited Cyprus in June, a marginal 0.3% drop on the same month in the previous year, the Cyprus Statistical Service said on Wednesday citing the results of the Passengers Survey.
For the period of January – June 2019 arrivals of tourists totalled 1.631 million compared to 1.645 million in the corresponding period of 2018, recording a decrease of 0.9%.
Tourist arrivals from Russia, Cyprus’ second largest market, fell an annual 5.1% in June 2019 while a 12.5% drop was recorded for tourists from Sweden.
Tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom, Cyprus’ biggest market, remained at the same level as last year, recording a minor increase of 0.1%, whereas arrivals from Israel recorded a significant increase of 39.7%.
The United Kingdom constitutes the main source of tourism for Cyprus for June 2019, accounting for 32.5% of the total followed by Russia with 23.0%, Israel with 6.5% and Sweden with 4.4%.
Cystat said that 86.4% of visitors came for holidays, 9.2% to visit to friends and relatives and 4.4% for business.
For the six month period, UK visitors were stable (+0.4%), Russian visitors were down 4.4%, Israeli visitors were up 11.5% and Swedish visitors were down 4.9%.
Arrivals from Germany fell 18.2%. The drop was anticipated following the closure of airlines offering flights from Cyprus to Germany.
