Industrial units are literally turned into time bombs after factory owners change their use and stock highly inflammable material there without even informing the Fire Service.
This is what Philenews reports, adding that there are approximately 110 industrial areas in Cyprus today and 15-20% of the hundreds of units in operation change their use or place dangerous materials without informing the authorities.
These are factories/production units that – in the case of a fire – they will act like time bombs.
The percentage of 15-20% is the state of play in the Municipality of Ypsonas, Limassol District, where six industrial units are currently active.
The change of use and storage of hazardous materials can prove to be fatal and it is only luck that has prevented deaths caused by fire in industrial units.
