Vaccination against HPV (human papilloma virus) is of utmost importance and Cypriots seem to have understood this considering that the coverage among adolescents today stands at 90%, according to officical data.
HPV can cause cervical and other cancers, including cancer of the vulva, vagina, penis, or anus. It can also cause cancer in the back of the throat.
The data was released by Heath Ministry Permanent Secretary Christina Yiannaki who presented the national vaccination advisory committee’s annual results for 2021 on Monday.
Stressing that the list of free vaccinations now administered by the island’s General Health Scheme (Gesy) she referred to hepatitis A and said the vaccination coverage now stands at 80% and 70% for varicella.
“It is important to now that the state’s total increase in vaccination costs is around 670%…updating the national vaccination program is one of the most effective public health interventions,” she also said.
