House approves resolution calling for minister’s resignation

Relevant News

The House of Representatives by majority on Friday approved a resolution adopting a Committee of Inquiry report on the collapse of the co-op and asking for the resignation of Finance Minister Harris Georgiades.

The resolution was tabled by Akel, Diko and Edek and approved by 32 votes in favour, 17 against and three abstentions — from the two Elam MPs and the president of the House.

It came after an acrimonious campaign on the collapse of the co-op.

After wrangling angrily over procedure, MPs on Friday also rejected two draft House decisions — one tabled by the Greens and the Citizens Alliance and the other by ELAM. The first apportioned responsibility to Disy, Akel and Diko for stripping the auditor general of the right to audit the co-op. The latter blamed all the ‘traditional’ parties for the co-op’s collapse.

The debate became even more acrimonious when Disy president Averoff Neophytou asked to table an amendment to the Green’s draft decision calling for the House to dissolve and for new elections to be held. To this, Diko president Nicolas Papadopoulos said he would be submitting his own amendment calling for the resignation of the government.

The House president did not agree to any amendments being submitted.
