Health Ministry to issue circular on monkeypox by Tuesday the latest

Health authorities in Cyprus will issue a circular and send it to all medical practitioners late on Monday or Tuesday the latest on what to do if a monkeypox case is identified here in the holiday island.

This is what Constantinos Athanasiou who is the Health Ministry’s spokesman told state radio.

Athanassiou also said the concerned services are now drafting a management plan that the country will implement in case such an incident is reported in Cyprus.

The plan is under the monkeypox guidelines of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control and the World Health Organization.

Monkeypox is an infectious disease that is usually mild, and is endemic in parts of west and central Africa. It is spread by close contact, so it can be relatively easily contained through such measures as self-isolation and hygiene.

As of last Saturday, 92 confirmed cases and 28 suspected cases of monkeypox have been reported from 12 member states that are not endemic for the virus, the U.N. agency has said.
