In the area of Vasilikos, specifically in the ground where DEFA (Natural Gas Public Company) is set to dig for the support infrastructure needed for the project of Regasification of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), there is phosphogypsum that the Hellenic Chemical Industries had been burying there for years.
So the ground needs to be decontaminated in a special way since the material buried there includes hazardous chemical substances and as a result this will delay the work needed for the arrival of the natural gas and the timelines set for July 2023.
Deep digging is needed to remove the phosphogypsum and the problem the government is now asked to solve is where the contaminated soil will be transferred, since there are no areas in Cyprus where hazardous waste can be buried.
