During surgery for a hysterectomy, a gynecologist forgot a dressing in the vagina of a patient. This incredible incident occurred on 21 May 2011 in a known clinic of Limassol and the Limassol District Court sentenced the doctor to compensations amounting to 232,225 euros plus legal interests since 31 October 2012, plus legal expenses.
Due to this omission the patent had post-operational complications. The doctor was informed about these over the phone and without examining the patient decided that it was a mild infection and recommended voltaren. However, since the symptoms continued, the patient consulted a second doctor who decided to proceed with surgery immediately where the dressing was found and removed. In total the patient underwent five surgeries and remained in the ICU for 21 days.
